To most people Mrs Mills or Gladys Mills was the yardstick by which all singalong pianists were measured (and still are!). Gladys was born on 29th August 1918 in Beckton in London's East End. Her Maiden name was Gladys Jordan before marrying Burt Mills and moving to Loughton in Essex.
Everybody loves the sound of the good old Mrs Mills piano from Abbey Road Studios. I remember hearing "In the Lost and Found" by Elliott Smith for the first time and falling in love immediately with the sound of a tack piano. I was obsessed to get the same sound and make a sample library, that was when I released W-Honky back in 2010.
Notable Vertegrands include a vintage 1905 piano named in honor of British pianist Mrs Mills, which has remained in use at Abbey Road Studios for over 50 years. Its characteristic out-of-tune honky-tonk sound appears on numerous Abbey Road recordings, including some by The Beatles.

So distinctive was it that the piano she always used at Abbey Road Studios was renamed "the Mrs Mills piano" amongst the personnel. It was used on many late Beatles recordings and is still used today! This piano was a 1905 Steinway Vertegrand piano (an upright piano). It was built at the Hamburg Steinway factory and was shipped to London in 1905.

The Model K or "Vertegrand" is an upright piano introduced in 1903 by Steinway & Sons.It is the oldest essentially unchanged upright piano design currently in mass production. Although production was interrupted from about 1939 until its reappearance in 1982, the structural design has remained essentially the same for well over a century.
